Best Practices
Installing fire and gas (F&G) detection systems capable of timely response upon detection can help reduce and mitigate risks at an operating facility. Such systems, if correctly installed, configured, and maintained can be effective, whether personnel are located nearby or far away from the process area. For personnel closer to the operations/process area, these systems can provide early detection and mitigation means, especially for smaller releases or fires, and can prevent an escalation by ensuring timely response. For personnel located further away from the processing area, these systems are critical sensors in the field that can provide indications for possible long-term issues: e.g., corrosion under insulation that can result in a release from piping, which would normally only be observed during frequent operator rounds.
