BakerRisk Expert Presentations on VCE Drag Loads and High Pressure Equipment & Barricades at the 2018 ASME Pressure Vessels & Piping Conference
The ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping (PVP) Conference in Prague, Czech Republic will feature two presentations by BakerRisk experts, both taking place on Tuesday, July 17, 2018.
One of such presentations, titled, “Importance of Connections in High-Pressure Barricade Design” will be presented by Senior Principal Engineer, Matt Edel. This paper discusses high pressure testing and operation of industrial tools and equipment, which can be hazardous to personnel and property in the event of an accidental mechanical failure or release of contained pressure. The paper also discusses concerns with hazard barricades, which are commonly installed around equipment to protect nearby personnel or property from projectile impacts or overpressure. This paper investigates the importance of engineered structural connections and consideration of global structural response in the design of protective barricades.
Mr. Edel will also chair a session on “Impact and Blast Loading” under the Fluid-Structure Interaction track.
Senior Principal Scientist, Dr. Jihui Geng, will present a paper titled “Drag Loads from Vapor Cloud Explosions”. This presentation will discuss the drag curves which were developed for evaluating damage that may occur to piping and vessels by drag loads due to gas flows generated by vapor cloud explosions (VCEs).
There is little guidance available to the piping and vessel designer regarding the magnitude of such drag loads, beyond evaluating drag loads on a case-by-case basis [e.g.; using computational fluid dynamics (CFD)]. This paper presents a newly developed set of drag loads vs standoff distance for a range of flame speeds and vapor cloud sizes. The purpose of this effort is to provide a database of drag loads that can be used to evaluate the structural response of piping, vessels, equipment, and supporting structures.
