The benefits of taking this course are:

  • What is the benefit of conducting this course/why should someone take this course?
Attendees will gain a familiarity with the range of phenomenologies related to designing structures that resist blast loads. After completion, attendees will have a solid understanding of shock waves, the loads applied to buildings and structures, the methods used to analyze structures, and the means used to achieve blast resistance in structures. Attendees will also have the opportunity to use design software in developing solutions to realistic design problems, solutions for which are reviewed in class and are provided for reference.
  • Who will benefit from taking this course (i.e. HSE manager, designer, etc.)?
Program/project managers responsible for designs with explosives safety considerations, structural engineers reviewing blast design calculations, engineers/physicists responsible for estimating blast loads on structures from high explosive detonations, test engineers attempting to replicate blast loads on test components.

What’s included?

The 5-day training program includes:

  1. Learn how to calculate blast pressure histories from a high explosive detonation (either internal or external)
  2. Understand the idealizations behind single degree of freedom (SDOF) models
  3. Understand how to apply SDOF models to a variety of typical structural components
  4. Learn the principles of quantity-distance siting
  5. Gain hands-on experience with commonly used blast loading and analysis software
  6. Become familiar with the requirements of UFC 3-340-02

This course will cover:

  • Airblast
  • Quantity-Distance Siting
  • Fragments and Debris
  • Dynamic Structural Analysis
  • Concrete Structures
  • Steel Structures
  • Masonry Structures

What Others Say

Testimonials

“I must say that this course has been fantastic. The specific expertise of the three instructors has been valuable, but I would be remiss if I did not highlight the value of your no doubt hard-won insights across all topical areas. From an explosives safety perspective (and absent formal structural education) it is especially valuable to understand where the tolerance for engineering judgement exists within the requirements. On that same line of commentary, highlighting where the requirements drive conservatism throughout the slide decks has been a very useful input as well. Also, the directly relevant student problems have been a high-value element of the course as well.”

“I recently had the privilege of taking the BakerRisk Blast Resistant Design course. The course covered key elements of hazard assessments for energetic operations and core elements of how to design structures to mitigate blast and fragmentation hazards. Having taken the course, I now feel confident in being able to speak technically to blast resistant structural design, understand the hazards of our operations, ensure adequate protective measures for my team, and operate as an informed customer during procurement of new blast resistant structures. In my opinion this course should be a fundamental requirement for anyone responsible for leading energetic operations, assessing the safety of energetic operations, accepting risk of operations, or procuring/maintaining blast resistant facility capabilities.”
