This two-day course will provide attendees with a foundational understanding of the importance of proper design and implementation of fixed fire protection systems in conjunction with effective emergency response resources – specifically in high-hazard industries such as Energy, Chemical/Petrochemical, and related fields.
The course discusses the importance of understanding the relationship between fixed systems and emergency response time/effectiveness. In addition to reviewing lessons learned from a case study review, the course will provide attendees with an understanding of how to evaluate the adequacy and reliability of fixed and mobile firefighting assets and other fire emergency response resources. The course also covers best practices for emergency response planning. Training is designed for the target audience of fire and safety professionals, insurance risk engineers, design engineers, and others interested in a better understanding of best practices in fire protection and fire consequence mitigation.

This paper presents a methodology for conducting damage mechanism reviews (DMRs) that can help operating companies maintain equipment integrity by providing a foundational basis on which to manage and mitigate common damage mechanisms that may effect plant equipment. The DMR methodology allows ammonia-related industries to draw on recent API recommended practices to provide a holistic management resource for the plant’s Mechanical Integrity Process Safety Management programs. The assessment methodology is demonstrated for typical process unit equipment in an ammonia plant. BakerRisk’s Asset Mechanical Integrity Plan identifies the potential damage mechanisms based on known process parameters, selects the appropriate inspection methods, and communicates relevant factors and possible mitigation options as a resource for the site.
“Fire Hazard Analysis” (FHA) is referenced in a number of industry standards, practices, and guidance documents and is often the key first-step to understanding potential fire exposure scenarios and developing a plan to manage those exposures.

Processing facilities require a reliable supply of electrical power. The consequences of a sudden power loss ranges from an inconvenience to a major incident with consequences including damage to equipment, failure of emergency systems, loss of containment, fires, explosions and environmental impact. Damage during restart can also be a major issue.
Worldwide, industry standards and best practices require personnel risk to be calculated and reviewed for existing and new petrochemical facilities. One way of addressing personnel risk is via a thorough Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA), which identifies populations who may incur high risk as a result of working at the facility. Subsequent risk reduction may include relocation of personnel or providing better protection (i.e., new buildings or building upgrades). However, a QRA can also identify the “high risk process loops” (HRPLs), which are those areas of the process contributing the most risk to onsite and offsite personnel.
In addition to structural components, a building’s infrastructure is also vulnerable to the effects of an internal or external explosion. A series of recent tests were performed using a shock tube in which a blast load was applied to a masonry wall to approximate the debris field produced by an explosion. The debris was then allowed to impact a number of test articles consisting of water-filled and pressurized pipe specimens. The specimens included two diameters of steel piping and one of copper piping. One set of specimens was air-backed and supported only at the top and bottom, while the other set was mounted against a rigid wall.
