Women in Process Safety: Experience and Advice from Cheryl Grounds
Interested in a career in Process Safety? Not really sure what it implies?
Our very own Senior Principal Engineer, Cheryl Grounds, was recently interviewed for the Process Safety Progress magazine, and shared some advice and experiences that helped shape her desire to serve in this profession.

Senior Principal Engineer, Process Safety, BakerRisk
Staff Consultant, CCPS
In the article Cheryl mentions, “There are still places where people do not understand what Process Safety Engineers do. I was frequently asked, why can’t we just have process engineers do their job with an eye to safety?”
Cheryl noted that the industry is often challenged to justify the “value” of avoiding a potential loss to those leaders who have to make tough financial decisions.
However, she concluded that “Process safety engineering has the advantage of interacting with all the other engineering disciplines. That means that you get to work with lots of other engineering experts, which can be challenging, educational, and very interesting. Process safety also gets to work with the various roles across a company from helping operators to influencing managers, which again can be challenging and ever-changing. And lastly is that it is process safety. This means the problems we address, the jobs we do, are all focused on preventing process safety events so that people and the environment don’t get harmed. This is definitely a worthwhile career!”
We thank Cheryl for her continued service to the Process Safety industry, and to our team at BakerRisk, for her efforts towards the protection and safety of others.
