PHMSA Adopts New Safety Regulations for Underground Natural Gas Storage Facilities
On December 19, 2016, the U.S. Department of Transportation, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) issued an Interim Final Rule (IFR) to regulate the safety of underground natural gas facilities throughout the United States. PHMSA’s rule making identified twelve key items for operators to consider as they review the operations of their underground storage facilities. In order to address the newly adopted regulations, BakerRisk has prepared both a white paper and a power point presentation to help review the regulations for Underground Natural Gas Storage to provide insight and guidance into the applicability of the rules, the timeline for compliance milestones, and a synopsis of the design, operation, and maintenance requirements. BakerRisk can evaluate well integrity and offer solutions for compliance. More details.
BakerRisk Staff Receives Best Paper Award
BakerRisk’s paper “Managing Cold Temperature and Brittle Fracture Hazards in Pressure Vessels” authored by Nick Cherolis, David Wood and Dan Benac was recognized as the Best Paper in Volume 16 of the Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention. The paper addresses brittle fractures of pressure vessels that can be both catastrophic and costly. The paper provides guidance in avoiding such failures by identifying some of the causes for cold embrittlement hazards and brittle fracture in pressure vessels. The paper also discusses how to assess existing equipment subject to cold conditions and brittle fracture concerns using BakerRisk’s Cold embrittlement tool which follows the guidelines of API 579-1/ASME FFS-1, Part 3. More details.
Safety Moment – Combustible Dust Explosions
BakerRisk has developed a new safety moment concerning combustible dust explosions. The video outlines the typical timeline for a dust explosion and shows an example of a large scale dust explosion test. The safety moment is a short video that demonstrates the need to evaluate dust hazards and enact proper mitigation measures. More details.
