Industrial facilities generally embrace good practices related to maintaining comprehensive Process Safety Information (PSI) and making sure that Management of Change policies include proper documentation updates. However, those practices are not necessarily applied uniformly to fire protection and emergency response assets and systems. This can lead to significant problems when attempting to use fire and emergency assets or when conducting inspections, testing, maintenance, or repairs (ITMR) of these assets. This article will discuss the importance of maintaining engineering documentation for fire protection systems and other emergency response assets by applying the same discipline and attention given to other PSI to ensure those critical safety systems are available when needed and function as intended.
Mr. Black is a member of BakerRisk’s Process Safety Group. He serves as BakerRisk’s managing consultant for the insurance risk and fire protection service areas. He has over 30 years of experience in industrial property loss prevention and risk engineering, primarily in the oil, gas, petrochemical, and power generation industries.
Mr. Black has developed and currently oversees BakerRisk’s flagship Fire Hazards and Mitigations Analysis (FHMA) service. The FHMA methodology and related computer modeling tools were developed to assist clients in performing focused, comprehensive analyses of their operation’s fire risks, as well as the mitigation resources available to limit fire consequences. In addition to FHMA, he is also BakerRisk’s subject matter expert in fire protection systems’ inspection, testing, and maintenance. Mr. Black currently leads a series of testing and assessment investigations, including Firewater Pump Performance Testing, Underground Network Gradient Testing, and Fireproofing Gap Analyses.
As the biofuels industry continues to expand in support of global decarbonization mandates and objectives, facility owners and developers are being challenged to balance production efficiency, operational reliability, and personnel safety.
As high hazard facilities, biofuels sites should focus on developing a fire protections strategy informed by performance-based analysis so strategies implemented meet the unique challenges found at each facility.
