Buildings susceptible to blast load threats are required to undergo deformations much larger than those expected for conventional loading. The deformation of individual building components is typically calculated using non-linear single degree of freedom (SDOF) analyses. These deformations are compared to published response limits to quantify the expected level of blast damage. Currently, no such limits exist for load-bearing prestressed concrete wall panels.
Mr. Mander is a member of BakerRisk’s Structures Group. His work focuses on the blast analysis and design of buildings due to accidental or malicious explosions Select prominent projects include blast-resistant modular buildings, airport traffic control towers, county courthouses, and hardened containment structures for the automotive, pharmaceutical, and oil exploration industries. He leads Research and Development efforts at BakerRisk and actively serves on the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) blast committees. Mr. Mander has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings and has patented precast modular design work that has received a national award from PCI.
Mr. Lowak is a member of BakerRisk’s Testing Group. He has 20 years of professional experience, with a focus on the design and evaluation of structures subjected to impulsive loadings. His dynamic testing efforts include research and developmental testing, as well as proof testing of structural components and systems loaded by dynamic loadings. Mr. Lowak also provides structural analysis consulting for blast resistant structures with specialty in blast resistant glazing systems and doors.
Mr. Polcyn is a member of BakerRisk’s Structures Group. Mr. Polcyn is highly experienced in the analysis and design of a wide variety of structures subject to blast or impulsive loads from accidental explosions and security threats, having worked for over 30 years specifically in this field. His work focuses on the project management of several large multi-disciplinary research programs on explosion consequences and blast response of buildings and structural components. He is also involved in several projects assessing the response of buildings to blast loads and the development of structural upgrades. In addition, Mr. Polcyn is regularly involved in the investigation of accidental industrial explosions.
As the biofuels industry continues to expand in support of global decarbonization mandates and objectives, facility owners and developers are being challenged to balance production efficiency, operational reliability, and personnel safety.
As high hazard facilities, biofuels sites should focus on developing a fire protections strategy informed by performance-based analysis so strategies implemented meet the unique challenges found at each facility.
