The Deflagration Load Generator (DLG) is a test rig intended to produce blast waves representative of vapor cloud explosions (VCEs) suitable for loading test articles. The test rig is essentially a reinforced steel box with one open side and dimensions of 48 feet long by 24 feet deep by 12 feet high. The rig is outfitted with congestion and filled with a flammable propane-air mixture. The congestion pattern and fuel concentration within the rig can be controlled such that a desired maximum pressure is achieved. The mixture is ignited at the rear wall of the test rig. Large test articles (e.g., tents, trailers, etc.) can be placed in front of the DLG open side, and the standoff distance can be adjusted to give the desired blast overpressure. Smaller test articles (e.g., drums, electrical enclosures, etc.) can be placed internal or external to the DLG.
Mr. Horn is a member of BakerRisk’s Blast Effects Group. His work focuses on a wide range of investigations ranging from large-scale explosions to occupational safety incidents including scene documentation, evidence collection, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA). He also serves as BakerRisk’s Corporate Safety Director and the facilitator for the Hazards Awareness Course. Over the years, Mr. Horn has adopted his R&D background, combining it with his knowledge of occupational safety, and applied it in accident investigations.
Early in his career, Mr. Horn was deeply involved in research and development, including incident reconstruction and large-scale explosion testing. He has applied his knowledge of blast effects to model and predict the explosion hazards for over 300 consequence analyses and Facility Siting Studies (FSS).
As the biofuels industry continues to expand in support of global decarbonization mandates and objectives, facility owners and developers are being challenged to balance production efficiency, operational reliability, and personnel safety.
As high hazard facilities, biofuels sites should focus on developing a fire protections strategy informed by performance-based analysis so strategies implemented meet the unique challenges found at each facility.
