SEVERAL articles recently published in TCE have introduced relatively novel distillation concepts. At first glance, there are no obvious reasons why these technologies should materially alter the safety profile of a chemical operation. However, as with all new technologies, operating experience is relatively limited. There have been cases where problems have occurred and it is reasonable to speculate on how the emerging methods might perform differently to traditional distillation in a safety context.
Mr. Moosemiller is a member of BakerRisk’s Process Safety Group. His work focuses on Process Safety and Risk and Reliability Assessment, with 35 years of experience in the following areas: Facility Siting Analyses (FSS), Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), Process Hazards Analysis (PHA), Reliability/Availability Assessment, Risk-Based Inspection, and auditing of management systems and field installations. He was previously part of teams that commissioned new oil refinery process units worldwide.
As the biofuels industry continues to expand in support of global decarbonization mandates and objectives, facility owners and developers are being challenged to balance production efficiency, operational reliability, and personnel safety.
As high hazard facilities, biofuels sites should focus on developing a fire protections strategy informed by performance-based analysis so strategies implemented meet the unique challenges found at each facility.
