BakerRisk has performed vented deflagration testing of congested enclosures over a range of configurations, congestion levels and fuels. This paper provides a comparison of the measured flame jetting distances to predictions made using standard methods commonly used to calculate the associated hazard zone. These methods include the National Fire Protection Association Standard on Explosion Protection by Deflagration Venting (NFPA 68), the British Standard’s Gas Explosion Venting Protective Systems (EN 14994) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis.
Mr. Diakow is a member of BakerRisk’s Blast Effects group. His work focuses executing Facility Siting Studies (FSS), Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA), Incident Investigations, and Dust Hazard Analyses (DHA). He has over a decade of experience in experimental testing and research with a focus on vapor cloud explosions, vented deflagrations, and deflagration to detonation transition (DDT). Mr. Diakow currently leads the Hydrogen group as part of BakerRisk’s Low Carbon Energy Risk Management services.
As the biofuels industry continues to expand in support of global decarbonization mandates and objectives, facility owners and developers are being challenged to balance production efficiency, operational reliability, and personnel safety.
As high hazard facilities, biofuels sites should focus on developing a fire protections strategy informed by performance-based analysis so strategies implemented meet the unique challenges found at each facility.
