The impact of thermal hazards on process buildings is an important component of site hazard evaluations. API RP-752 recommends that process facilities analyze thermal hazards and assess their impact to onsite buildings and their occupants. Thermal loads resulting from fires in process units and equipment can have a significant impact on buildings, especially if the building is close to the fire source. Some buildings may be designed for blast and toxic protection, which allows the buildings to be located near process units and equipment, but possibly exposed to thermal hazards from a potential fire.
Mr. Raibagkar is a principal engineer in the protective structures group. His work focuses on Non-Linear Dynamic analyses of various types of existing buildings (steel, concrete, and masonry) to determine their blast capacity for different loading scenarios. He is also experienced with designing retrofits for existing buildings to achieve the desired level of protection against blast loads. Mr. Raibagkar is also a voting member of CSA S850:23 – Design and assessment of buildings subjected to blast loads committee.
Anay is also the Manager of Software Development where he oversees the production of all BakerRisk software.
Mr. Edel is a member of BakerRisk’s Protective Structures Group. His work focuses on impulsive and conventional loading of structures for industrial and government applications. This has primarily included analysis and design of new and existing buildings, blast-resistant upgrade designs, hazard containment enclosures, and federal building and airport evaluations and site planning. He has performed siting studies for various petrochemical plants to determine the response of structural components and systems to blast loads.
As the biofuels industry continues to expand in support of global decarbonization mandates and objectives, facility owners and developers are being challenged to balance production efficiency, operational reliability, and personnel safety.
As high hazard facilities, biofuels sites should focus on developing a fire protections strategy informed by performance-based analysis so strategies implemented meet the unique challenges found at each facility.
