Accidental releases of flammable and toxic materials from hazard sources of different sizes ranging from small leaks to full-bore pipe ruptures can represent a wide range of impacts to buildings. Facility siting for petrochemical and chemical plants is required to cover credible accident scenarios. Results of such studies often include catastrophic consequences that may be impractical to eliminate through structural designs. Rather than designing buildings for a high level of protection against the most severe credible events, a risk-based approach provides a practical and a cost effective approach to maximize safety.
Mr. Dyer is a member of BakerRisk’s Structures Group. His work focuses on mitigating risk and hazards to occupants of blast-loaded structures. Mr. Dyer has extensive experience in the design of blast-resistant buildings and building upgrades to mitigate explosion risk, blast damage, and occupant vulnerability in petrochemical facilities. He has participated in numerous projects as the lead structural engineer for major international petrochemical companies, including numerous Facility Siting Studies (FSS) of petrochemical plants and refineries around the world. Mr. Dyer has authored various papers on structural risk assessment and design of blast-loaded structures.
Mr. Raibagkar is a principal engineer in the protective structures group. His work focuses on Non-Linear Dynamic analyses of various types of existing buildings (steel, concrete, and masonry) to determine their blast capacity for different loading scenarios. He is also experienced with designing retrofits for existing buildings to achieve the desired level of protection against blast loads. Mr. Raibagkar is also a voting member of CSA S850:23 – Design and assessment of buildings subjected to blast loads committee.
Anay is also the Manager of Software Development where he oversees the production of all BakerRisk software.
Mr. Sarrack is a member of BakerRisk’s Process Safety Group. His expertise is focused on process safety and risk analysis, where he has participated in hazard analysis teams, both as a contributor and as a team leader. His expertise also extends to the development of Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Event Tree Analysis (ETA), equipment reliability studies and failure data, and has executed source term and consequence analysis.
Mr. Sarrack has developed cost vs. benefit analyses for proposed facility modifications and provided technical risk analysis expertise to numerous plant decision processes. He has also produced risk management guidelines, as well as implemented procedures for performance of Facility Siting Studies (FSS) and Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRAs) for multiple companies.
As the biofuels industry continues to expand in support of global decarbonization mandates and objectives, facility owners and developers are being challenged to balance production efficiency, operational reliability, and personnel safety.
As high hazard facilities, biofuels sites should focus on developing a fire protections strategy informed by performance-based analysis so strategies implemented meet the unique challenges found at each facility.
