Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) is an extremely powerful tool to help one objectively assess the risk of complex processes. Most processes that use Highly Toxic Materials (HTMs) are complicated and pose hazards both to the employees on site and, in many cases, to the neighbouring offsite community. Understanding the risk associated with these HTM processes is often complicated due to the many risk mitigation systems that may be employed by the operator to control the hazards. Companies often conduct QRA studies to evaluate the potential risk exposures to their employees and neighbouring communities and, in some cases, to satisfy regulatory requirements. Regulatory bodies increasingly scrutinise QRA studies as part of their determination on the tolerability of risk posed by facilities processing HTMs.
Mr. Shah is a member of BakerRisk’s Process Safety Group. His work focuses on Risk Management Services, including Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA), Corporate Risk Management, and Risk-based Decision Support. Mr. Shah brings an extensive array of skills that includes Risk Management Process Improvement, Decision Analysis, Decision Criteria/Guideline Development, Risk Analysis and Quantification, and development of conceptual layout and equipment specification for toxic risk mitigation.
During his career, Mr. Shah has identified and evaluated cost-effective risk optimization alternatives that allow management to make informed risk management decisions and has helped clients optimize their risk management budgets.
Mr. Magraw is a member of BakerRisk’s Process Safety Group. He has an extensive career of over thirty years in safety and risk management, including over thirteen years in the oil and gas sector and over eighteen years in the nuclear industry. His work focuses on the execution of the following services: Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Safety Instrumented Systems SIS/Safety Integrity Levels (SIL), Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), audit, insurance risk engineering, and management system development. He was previously head of environment, health, safety, and quality for an international nuclear services company. Mr. Magraw has also managed the corporate HSE management system and assurance program for a major international nuclear business with a global portfolio of nuclear and non-nuclear operations.
As the biofuels industry continues to expand in support of global decarbonization mandates and objectives, facility owners and developers are being challenged to balance production efficiency, operational reliability, and personnel safety.
As high hazard facilities, biofuels sites should focus on developing a fire protections strategy informed by performance-based analysis so strategies implemented meet the unique challenges found at each facility.
