Baker Engineering and Risk Consultants, Inc. (BakerRisk®) and Daewoo Engineering and Construction Co. Ltd. (Daewoo) performed vented (i.e., partially-confined) vapor cloud explosion (VCE) tests with both propane and lean hydrogen mixtures. BakerRisk’s Deflagration Load Generator (DLG) test rig was used to perform the tests. The DLG test rig was designed primarily to produce centrally-peaked blast waves that are representative of VCEs suitable for blast loading test articles, but has also been used for vented deflagration testing. The DLG test rig is a steel box with one open side, measuring 48 ft. long by 24 ft. deep by 12 ft. high (14.6 m by 7.3 m by 3.7 m). The DLG test rig is outfitted with congestion, filled with the desired fuel-air mixture, and then ignited near the center of the rear wall.
Mr. Horn is a member of BakerRisk’s Blast Effects Group. His work focuses on a wide range of investigations ranging from large-scale explosions to occupational safety incidents including scene documentation, evidence collection, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA). He also serves as BakerRisk’s Corporate Safety Director and the facilitator for the Hazards Awareness Course. Over the years, Mr. Horn has adopted his R&D background, combining it with his knowledge of occupational safety, and applied it in accident investigations.
Early in his career, Mr. Horn was deeply involved in research and development, including incident reconstruction and large-scale explosion testing. He has applied his knowledge of blast effects to model and predict the explosion hazards for over 300 consequence analyses and Facility Siting Studies (FSS).
Mr. Malik is a member of BakerRisk’s Blast Effects Group. Mr. Malik’s work focuses on the development and application of empirical, analytical, and numerical models for the characterization of flammability and explosion phenomena, supporting BakerRisk’s efforts to help our clients better understand their onsite hazards. Mr. Malik is also responsible for the coordination and oversight of all BakerRisk testing operations. This includes the materials laboratory at the corporate headquarters in San Antonio, the 160-acre Wilfred E Baker Test Facility (WEBTF), and the 2300-acre Box Canyon Test Facility (BCTF). As a certified fire and explosion investigator (CFEI). Mr. Malik supports and/or leads the investigation into accidental industrial fires and explosions as well as other near-miss incidents related.
As the biofuels industry continues to expand in support of global decarbonization mandates and objectives, facility owners and developers are being challenged to balance production efficiency, operational reliability, and personnel safety.
As high hazard facilities, biofuels sites should focus on developing a fire protections strategy informed by performance-based analysis so strategies implemented meet the unique challenges found at each facility.
