Demonstrated Experience and Industry Leading Expertise in Process Hazard Analysis

Our Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) staff has, on average, over 20 years of experience in the process industry and many possess advanced specializations or certifications for specific client methodologies. Our experienced facilitators provide value to each client engagement with enhanced knowledge and the ability to draw on the cross-functional skillsets within BakerRisk to provide a unique approach to guiding your teams through hazard identification and risk mitigation. Additional value to the project team arises through our experienced professionals, ability to identify when additional analysis is needed, and how to achieve the desired results.

What is Process Hazard Analysis?

A PHA is an analysis that can take many forms, from qualitative to semi-quantitative to fully quantitative. Our PHA studies are fully compliant with specified corporate or local regulatory requirements including OSHA PSM 29 CFR 1910.119 requirements and CCPS best practices. Although we license the most popular PHA recording software packages in order to match your in-house tools where desired, we also offer our proprietary PHA-Tool© software to assist in facilitation and risk-ranking processes. This PHA software can help conduct a process hazard analysis using a variety of methodologies including HAZOP and LOPA.

Apart from being a valuable tool to assess risk, the various methods of process hazard analysis can also be utilized to resolve concerns related to specific high-risk scenarios. For these situations, our facilitators have extensive experience in performing Layer Of Protection Analysis (LOPA) in support of other PHA methods, as a standalone analysis, or to determine SIL targets for safety functions.

A process hazard analysis can offer cost savings by averting risks and by identifying opportunities to prioritize safeguards through risk-ranking techniques. BakerRisk’s experienced staff can assist clients in selecting and implementing the PHA method best suited for their needs.

Commonly used process hazard analysis (PHA) methods include the following:

  • Hazard and Operability (HAZOP)
  • Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA)
  • Event Tree
  • Fault Tree

BakerRisk staff have expertise in numerous process industries including:

  • Refining and Petrochemicals
  • Midstream Processes and Facilities
  • Nitrogen and Phosphate Fertilizer Manufacturing
  • Standard or Specialty Chemical Industry
  • Offshore/onshore Oil & Gas Production
  • LNG & Pipelines
  • Written Procedures and Specialized Operations

Changes in Facility Siting Standards: API 752, 753, & 756

In industries where the daily risks of potentially catastrophic events, such as vapor cloud explosions, are a constant concern, there’s no room for compromise – inherently safer design principles, effective hazard identifications and analyses, and adherence to up-to-date industry standards aren’t just important, they’re essential. Since its establishment in 1919, the American Petroleum Institute (API)…
