SIS/SIL Solutions

Keeping your people protected with expert tools and solutions.

Safety Instrumented Functions are intended to protect against specific and identifiable hazards such as fires, explosions, toxic releases, or financial losses. BakerRisk offers support for all safety lifecycle phases based on your needs. Our world-class process safety software aids you in providing the right resources for a given hazard, and if your site has not already developed an SIS program, we support the creation of an integrated SIS program using industry best practices. The SIS/SIL services we offer include:

  • SIL selection/determination using Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) or other methods using BakerRisk’s proprietary PHA-Tool©
  • SIL verification using simplified equations, Reliability Block Diagrams (RBDs), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
  • Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS) development
  • Maintenance test plan development
  • On-site SIF validation and auditing
  • Alarm Rationalization (ISA 18.2-2016)
  • Cyber security assessment (ISA99 and IEC62443)
  • Fire and gas detection mapping (ISA-TR84.00.07)

Safety and Risk Mitigation

How SIS/SIL contribute to workplace safety.

The process industry requires numerous protective systems to prevent incidents like fire, explosion, or toxic releases that can cause fatalities and/or monetary losses. As such, SIS have been used for many years to reduce risk in the process industries. If instrumentation is to be effectively used for Safety Instrument Functions (SIF), it is essential that this instrumentation achieves a certain minimum set of standards and performance levels.

We have over 40 years of experience understanding the hazards, working with the instrumentation, and sitting on the committees maintaining the standards. As such, we’re qualified and ready to provide you with the tools and solutions you need to mitigate your risks.

Key Safety Standards

The Standards IEC 61508 and IEC-61511 introduced requirements that have shaped the design, selection, installation, operation, and maintenance of instrumented safety systems. These standards are based on a SIS Safety Lifecycle and are designed to address SIS management from the initial concept through decommissioning. The standards require that a performance target be assigned and verified for each SIF and that this target is quantitative and measurable — generally known as the Safety Integrity Level (SIL).
