Hydrogen is anticipated to play a key role in the energy transformation, but with great power comes great responsibility to handle safely. This one-day course will provide an overview to hydrogen production methods, transportation, and storage with a focus on key safety elements. This course will include a workshop activity around hydrogen facility siting and safety systems, discussions of applicable hydrogen codes and best practices, and examples of past hydrogen incidents. A course survey will be provided upon sign up to help focus workshop activity on hydrogen uses of interest. Training is designed for the target audience of project managers, design/process engineers, and site health and safety advisors, but anyone involved in developing hydrogen projects and operations is anticipated to benefit from the material covered.
This course includes the following topics:
- Introduction to hydrogen and its properties
- Overview and key safety challenges for select hydrogen production methods:
- Thermochemical (steam methane reformation, pyrolysis)
- Electrolytically (electrolysis)
- Safety elements to consider for hydrogen transportation and storage:
- Gas/liquid transport
- Hydrogen energy carriers
- Truck/ship/pipeline
- Hands-on workshop on performing a HAC study with NFPA 497
- “How do I know I have a safe hydrogen system?” – Workshop activity
- Expectations of hydrogen under relevant standards (API, NFPA, ASME, etc.)
- Examples of hydrogen incidents and lessons learned
