What We Do
Over several decades, we have earned a trusted reputation for providing cost-effective solutions for risk mitigation through the design of numerous new buildings and building upgrades around the world, utilizing both consequence and risk-based methodologies. Our engineers have extensive experience analyzing building components and designing buildings that are resistant to exposures from blast, fragment/debris, thermal, and toxic hazards. Our combined experience in blast-resistant design and structural testing promotes comprehensive and effective solution approaches.
When you work with BakerRisk, you will benefit from the combined knowledge of our team members, who specialize in blast effects, structural design, and process safety risk methodologies. BakerRisk engineers are involved from preliminary discussions of concepts through the building construction process. Our proprietary software seamlessly supports design and analysis work with methodologies that have been validated through decades of experimental testing and incident investigation experience.

How We Do It
BakerRisk provides a range of blast resistant analysis, studies, and design services using our specialized tools and industry experience.
Consequence and risk-based Facility Siting Studies often require a thorough review of many buildings located at a site for a large number of potential explosion accident scenarios. These evaluations require efficient models to estimate Building Damage Levels (BDLs) for the predicted blast loads and are often based on simplified Single-Degree-of-Freedom (SDOF) analysis. These SDOF models may be refined based on available explosion accident or test data, where applicable. An example of this is our Building Evaluation and Screening Tool (BEAST), which was developed for the Explosion Research Cooperative (ERC) to serve as a screening level database of building response models for standard buildings types.
Most analyses and designs of blast-loaded buildings and building components utilize SDOF analysis methods to calculate the dynamic response of individual wall, roof, or ancillary components. The maximum responses are compared to criteria published by government and industrial guidance documents, regulations, or standards. We perform SDOF analyses using various programs as applicable for a given project such as SBEDS (developed for the DoD), ISADS (developed for the ERC), and other in-house programs. If improved accuracy is required, Multi-Degree-of-Freedom (MDOF) models are often developed.
When complexities in the structural configuration or loading environment require high fidelity models, our experts conduct Finite Element Analyses (FEA) to meet your needs. BakerRisk routinely uses industry available programs such as LS-DYNA, DYNA-3D, ANSYS, and SAP2000 for detailed FEA studies. In addition, we combine these analyses with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis when the interaction between structural response and applied loads becomes an important factor, such as when lighter weight structures are subjected to blast loads.
An added benefit of using our structural engineers to tackle your most important structural concerns is the confidence we provide by knowing that our methodologies have been validated against incident investigation data and full-scale structural response tests.
Support
BakerRisk utilizes decades of testing and design experience to guide our approach when it comes to new building design. Additionally, BakerRisk has been an industry leader and technical contributor when it comes to the development of blast design standards and recommended practice documents. The goal of the building design process is to deliver a solution that can be implemented to reduce the risk to the building occupants. It also allows our expertise to remove the unnecessary conservatism that would translate to higher construction costs.
Below is a listing of documents toward which BakerRisk has contributed:
Upgrades
BakerRisk has extensive experience in strengthening existing buildings through the design of blast-resistant structural upgrades. These upgrade designs are the product of understanding how structural systems respond to blast loading: knowledge gained through our involvement with structural blast testing, advanced analysis, and accident investigations. While reviewing the response of a building to explosion hazards, its resistance to other hazards, such as thermal and toxic hazards, should also be reviewed. It is often possible to incorporate thermal and/or toxic mitigation measures within the blast-resistant upgrade design.
Software tools
Leveraging BakerRisk’s proprietary software tools SafeSite3G©, QRATool©, and RMTool©, we provide a range of cost-effective risk-based building design services to meet specific client needs. These services can range from conceptual “best practice” design support to detailed design building support, but typically include one or more of the following:
